Still no budget deal in Washington

The headline:  Democrats, Republicans fail to reach budget deal

The summary:  Despite negotiations throughout the day on Tuesday, Democrats and Republicans in Washington failed to reach a deal that would produce a budget for the remainder of the fiscal year.  With no deal, the government would be scheduled to shut down at the end of the week.

The reaction:  This shouldn’t come as any big surprise.  Budget issues at both the state and federal level have taken center stage over the past couple of months and the fact that neither side can come to an agreement shows how divisive negotiations have been.  Republicans want a smaller government and smaller deficit.  Democrats don’t want to cut needed programs.

I think a deal ultimately gets done this week.  Neither side wants the bad PR that goes along with a potential government shutdown.  This could get quite interesting though as we draw closer to Friday’s deadline without a deal.
