Chicago school bans lunches from home

The headline:  Chicago school bans homemade lunches, the latest in national food fight

The link:  http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110411/us_yblog_thelookout/chicago-school-bans-homemade-lunches-the-latest-in-national-food-fight

The summary:  Chicago’s Little Village Academy has formally banned all homemade “brown bag” lunches except in the case of the presence of food allergies.

The reaction:  Is this some kind of joke?  Are you kidding me?  Making a claim that cafeteria food is better than homemade is one thing but banning lunches from home altogether is absolutely asisnine.

I’ve seen Super Size Me and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and there’s no way that you’re going to convince that as a whole the processed food that’s served in school cafeterias is going to be better for you than a lunch from mom at home.  Yes, there’s potential for unhealthy stuff on both sides but the public school systems REALLY need to step up their game before they can even say with a straight face that their stuff is nutritionally superior.  It’s a joke.
