Japan ranks Fukushima crisis as equal to Chernobyl

The headline:  Japan regulators raise severity of nuclear accident

The summary:  Japan has raised the severity level of the crisis at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant from a 5 to a 7.  The new level is the highest on an international scale of nuclear accidents and is equal to that of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

The reaction:  Comparing the Fukushima incident directly with Chernobyl should give you some idea of just how severe the situation really is.  The plant is not an immediate threat right now but they are definitely still struggling to operate normally and keep things under control.

The Chernobyl accident left a large section of Russia virtually uninhabitable.  Are we headed toward the same thing with Fukushima?  I don’t know.
